clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Verdadera Destreza<\/strong> could be translated as \u00abtrue art\u00bb or \u00abtrue skill\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Characteristic of this style is that the <em>diestro<\/em> (a person who studies Destreza) fights in a mostly upright position, light-footed and in continuous movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system is philosophically and scientifically influenced by the teachings of Aristotle, Plato and Euclid. Explanations are based on mathematics or geometry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Destreza was considered a form of self-defense, which is why self-protection plays a major role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, based on Christian thought, the intensity of the attacker&#8217;s violence should be responded to appropriately and proportionately. Disarming the opponent (<em>Movimento de Conclusion<\/em>) and being able to grant them mercy was the greatest goal that a diestro could achieve in battle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fencing approach of Verdadera Destreza is to control the opponent&#8217;s weapon by overbinding (<em>atajo<\/em>) it in order to deliver the safest possible attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In theory, the aim is to make it impossible for the opponent to hit the diestro by controlling the fencing line (called the first vertical plane). This is achieved through non-linear footwork and a constant search for favorable angles for attack and defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, the Diestro should try not to make any extreme movements. For example, an extremely long lunge would not be in the spirit of the system, although smaller lunges are depicted in Rada&#8217;s work (see <a href=\"#sources\">sources<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another interesting point is the mindset required, in which patience plays an immensely important role. If the diestro is too focused on scoring their own hit, experience has shown that they will often get hit themselves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-contrast-color has-base-2-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-cdb03a5de181253d410e5a947ca672a1 has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-5 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" id=\"styles\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-top:0;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-bottom:0;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignwide has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-4 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">The Styles &amp; Periods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Verdadera Destreza tradition originates in the middle of the 16th century and during the three centuries in which it is active we can see an evolution, both of the tools (swords, daggers, etc.) and of the styles, the theory and even the body positions described in the sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Academia da Espada we define three great periods, to be studied with the appropriate weapons. The boundaries between each period are diffuse, and differences we highlight in them actually involved different interpretations of the broader Verdadera Destreza tradition (for instance, Carrancistas vs. Pachequistas). While he began following Carranza, with the passage of time diverged from the theory of the first master, developing his own strain of the art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other authors are worth mentioning, such as <strong>Octavio Ferrara<\/strong>, <strong>Diogo G\u00f3mes de Figueiredo<\/strong> or <strong>G\u00e9rard Thibault<\/strong>, all of them with great differences but also with great points in common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Modern Period<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube guards and the famous and characteristic cup hilt) during the 1630s favored a small but important evolution in the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swords are now held with both the index and middle fingers in the ricasso, together with the thumb, affording more strength and control in the <em>atajo<\/em>, and perfecting the characteristic straight angle stance of the fencer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relevance of this choice is stressed in the work of master <strong>Luis D\u00edaz de Viedma<\/strong>, published in 1639. <strong>Cristobal de Cala<\/strong>, in 1642, shows how this way to hold the sword helps to control the opposing weapon (<em>atajo<\/em>), even when our blade is under theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery inferior<\/em> will be explored in great detail by the most important master of this period, <strong>Francisco Lorenz de Rada<\/strong>, who published his first treatise in 1695 and, in 1705, wrote what amounts to the most profuse and detailed description of theory and techniques for Verdadera Destreza, <em>Nobleza de la Espada<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the contact with foreign schools and the evolution of weapons promote the occasional use of lower, less upright stances, such as the famous <em>Bella Espa\u00f1ola<\/em>, as described by Rada, or a similar stance previously described by <strong>\u00c1lvaro Guerra de la Vega<\/strong> in 1681.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This era is the most prolific in treatises and authors. Some will remain more or less orthodox within the tradition, such as <strong>Francisco Antonio de Ettenhard<\/strong> or <strong>Miguel P\u00e9rez de Mendoza<\/strong>. Some will instead hail back to archaic tendencies, such as as <strong>Nicol\u00e1s de Tamariz<\/strong>, who insists on wielding the sword with just the index finger in the ricasso. Its main exponent is the <em>Maestro Mayor<\/em> <strong>Rodr\u00edguez del Canto<\/strong>, with his 1735 work <em>El Disc\u00edpulo Instru\u00eddo<\/em>, covering the use of the rapier, alone and with a dagger, but also expounding on the weapon that will replace it: the smallsword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This mixed school is characterized by a blending of the Iberian, Italic and French styles. Full understanding required a high standard of education, for example in philosophy and geometry, that was not available to everyone at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contemporary writer Francisco de Quevedo also made fun of Destreza fencers in one of his works (<em>El Busc\u00f3n<\/em>), calling them fools because they seemed to want to learn and practice this system but were unable to understand it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-6 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jer\u00f3nimo S\u00e1nchez de Carranza<\/strong> is considered the founder of this fencing system with his book <em>De la Filosof\u00eda de las Armas y de su Destreza y la Agression y Defensa Cristiana<\/em> from 1569. Pacheco was chief fencing master and was in charge of certifying new fencing masters, which he used to spread the Verdadera Destreza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his early works he promoted and published many of Carranza&#8217;s teachings, but later became increasingly critical of him. This was probably done with the intention of consciously distancing himself from Carranza.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another interesting author is <strong>Francisco Antonio de Ettenhard y <strong> Abarc<\/strong>a<\/strong>, (~1650-1701). He served both King Carlos II and King Philip V and was captain of the king&#8217;s German guard. He is considered one of the four great masters of the Verdadera Destreza (alongside Carranza, Pacheco, and Rada).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ettenhard elaborated on how to counteract the \u00abItalian\u00bb style of fencing. One of his most famous works, entitled <em>Compendio de los Fundamentos de la Verdadera Destreza y Filosof\u00eda de las Armas<\/em>, dates from 1675 and was published in Madrid. In addition to the compendium, he wrote <em>El Diestro italiano y espa\u00f1ol<\/em>, printed in 1697. Chiefly important are <em>Crisol de la verdadera destreza, y Filosof\u00eda Matem\u00e1tica de las Armas<\/em> (1695), and <em>Nobleza de la espada<\/em> (1705)\u200b \u2014 a three-tome treatise in which he builds up the art of fencing from philosophical, geometric and theological principles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide are-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-10 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\">Outside Verdadera Destreza<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authors of Verdadera Destreza present it as opposed to the <em>Esgrima Vulgar<\/em> or <em>Comun<\/em> (so-called ordinary fencing), which was of older origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Destreza authors never tired of showing that they rejected this way of fencing, but this was mainly a theoretical effort.
